5th day ~ @ Bangkok, Thailand

I slept well last night. It was so nyenyak.. and it will be more nyenyak if it was abang next to me . Missed u abang... Anyway, bangun, bermalas-malasan atas katil, nak mandi pun rasa malas. Then, Pn Budhi n Zada ketuk pintu bagitau they all nak gi sambung shopping. I wasn't going as I think malam tadi pun dah banyak yang aku beli. Lepas mandi, turun breakfast. N, breakfast hari ni lagi sedap dari semalam. Mungkin sebab ada fish n shrimp, so boleh la bantai dgn nasik. Dah habis makan, kitorang jalan2 je la kat around hotel, tukar duit sikit n ambik gambar. Tempat kitorang duduk ni namanya Woraburi Hotel dekat Sukhumvit Soi 4. Sukhumvit sois are basically known with their open bars as well as thai ladies mingling aorund to offer their services. What kind of services.. pls dont ask me. So, kalau malam2 jalan nampak happening giler la. Everywhere, you can always see white tourists walking around with Thai ladies. I wonder, how do they communicate ekkk? Sedagkan post grad student kat Chula Univ pun English x berapa fluent, inikan pulak all these ladies. Mmmmm... And, the other thing, tourists ni semua x takut AIDS ke? Ishkk... mintak simpang la.

Then, masa kitorang tengah tangkap gambar tu, ada sorang tuut-tuut driver ni approach, offer to round Bangkok for only 20 baht. 2 ringgit la lebih kurang. I was cheap! Really cheap. But that only if we agreed to go to this jewellery store which promised him a petrol voucher if he took tourists to their shop. Automatically I realized that this is only the way nak menipu la lebih kurang. But then, Zaffri n Suhana dah agree, so I have no choice. But, I know for certain, if it is me, I wont buy these lies.

Bila naik tuut-tuut tu baru aku perasan sebenarnya Chula Univ dgn hotel kitorang ni dekat sangat2, cuma kalau dtg dr Chula U nak ke hotel ni, dia kena buat satu pusingan besar sebab banyak jalan yg one way. Then, masa tu nampak la jugak, Siam Paragon and all this exclusive mall yg mula2nya aku ingatkan xde langsung.. Then, dia bawak kitorang gi jewellery store. Aku x beli la. Zaffri ngan Suhana je yg beli. Lepas dah beli2 tu, terus balik sebab nak kejarkan shuttle yg mungkin dah tunggu nak bawak gi airport. Tapi, sempat gak la ambik gambar kat hotel sebelum gerak naik shuttle.

Then, naik shuttle terus gi airport. Rasa sekejap je dah sampai. Masa datang tu rasa kemain lama lagi. Sampai airport, check in luggage, tangkap2 gambar sikit, then shopping sikit kat duty free. Xde beli apa sangat la, cuma beli kerepek pisang untuk adik2 n abang. Oh yee, ada gak beli loreal day cream. It was chep 250 baht. Approximately 25 ringgit, 10 ringgit cheaper compared tu beli kat malaysia. Then, makan jap, naik flight, tidur, turun flight, ambik bas gi KL Sentral, ambik taxi balik rumah Pn Budhi, n ambik kereta balik rumah sendiri. So, that's the end of it. Overall, what I could say is, this is a very enjoyable trip.

I slept well last night sampai pagi pun terlajak. Luckily, Zaffri is ready, so at 7.30 dia dah turun tunggu driver tu. The driver was early. At 7.30, dia dah tunggu kat lobby bawak card tulis nama Pn Budhi. Padahal, kitorang kat atas lagi, tengah bersiap. 7.45 baru nak turun breakfast. ngok ngek sana sini, around 8.15 baru kitorang gerak. TAPI, TU LA.. WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNICATION, out terus. susah betul. most thais x pandai cakap english, the same thing with this young driver, jenuh nak explain. memula, ingat ok je, but then, receptionist hotel tu panggil aku n bagitau yg driver ni x tau kitorang nak gi mana. so, aku pun cakaplah kata nak gi grand palace, wat arun etc. Jadi kerja pulak receptionist tu nak kena jadik translator pulak. then, driver tu angguk2, tapi lepas tu boss dia call n boss dia nak cakap ngan aku. To clarify things, I guess. N, ke asked me about our plan, I explained but then he suggested that we go to the floating market first, then only we go to the rose garden, grand place and wat arun. So, we just follow him. He knows best.. Then, off we go. the journey was kind of long sebab aku pun siap tertidur2 gak la. Sedar2 je, dah nak sampai. Dari situ kitorang kena naik bot aka sampan untuk sampai ke floating market tu. At first, I thought sampai2 je terus nampak floating market n that is the option if we want to hop on the sampan atau tidak... tapi rupa2nya kena naik sampan baru sampai sana. Tapi x kisah la, dah alang2 sampai... pergi je la terus.

Bila dah naik sampan, baru realized.. yeah.. this is really a venice of the east It is unique and humble in its own way. Sebelum sampai kat floating market tu, kitorang lalu kawasan kampung yang betul2 tepi terusan ni. For sure this is not a river, it might be canal I guess.

On that morning, I woke up with nervousness… this is my first presentation with international audience. Not really international la, regional is most appropriate, but still… there are not Malaysians, their school of thought is different, their perception is different.

My session is at the morning. I am so relieved… cepat sikit hilang beban ni… First session is basically the opening remarks from Head of both universities, keynote speakers from both universities, and afterward, we were divided into groups for oral presentation.

I was the third person if I’m not mistaken. Memula nak present tu, cuak dah mula hilang, and minute after minute, nervous tu dah hilang and I was kind of enjoying it. Tapi, bila sampai part Q&A, nervous tu kind of datang balik. Though personally I would say, I am not satisfied with this presentation (cause I know I could do a lot much better), but, it make me feel good, feel nice and a little bit proud of myself. There were a lot of questions being asked. The head of Env Eng Dept Chula Univ is also there, he asked me, me answering his, he nodded frequently, as if my answers are reasonable (who cares, anyway…), but it made me feel good, it made me confident, and the most important is, it made me happy. Then, Prof Rao asked, I tried my best to provide the best answers (but, obviously, it is not), and at some points, Dr Sumiani added up her comments, kind of like helping me, but overall, it was OK. And with that, I ended the presentation. Once I said thank you, Prof Rao said these magic words with his encouraging tone… “That’s good Nuruol, very good, very details, very research oriented”. I cant help myself from smiling and beaming, and beaming and beaming for the rest of the day . Can’t wait to tell Abang. I was so happy, (enthusiastic I would say), and proud of myself. I promised myself, this is only the beginning, I will try harder, to make myself noticed, to make myself among the best. I will…

Then, lunch time. The best part is, the lunch was so delicious, so nice. It was all seafoods. Various kind of seafoods, fish, shrimps, squid, except crab je xde. If I’m not mistaken, ada 4-5 lauk la jugak. Dengan rasa relief yg teramat, ditambah pulak dengan lunch yg memang sedap gile, ditambah pulak dgn cheerful environment, it was really nice. Eating, beaming, taking photos, beaming, studying maps, beaming, planning our tour for tomorrow, beaming, having chat with Dr. Thaksit, beaming, I felt like I was a kerang busuk . But, who cares. I am enjoying these

Lepas makan, we went to visit the environmental engineering dept’s labs. One thing that I could say, it is impressive. They have their own department for environmental engineering, not depending to the other department, they have 18 full time staffs with 7 labs. All labs are equipped with all these high-tech equipments, which, we would not be able to afford. Then, we proceed with the afternoon session, tea time, photo session and ended with visits to civil labs.

But, this time, we didn’t go with them, as we have already visited the env eng dept during lunch time. Instead, we walked around campus with hope that we could find any signage with Chulalongkorn University written on it. But, we didn’t find any, so we went to the university bookstore and we bought a glass with Chula University logo on it (which later we found that it is the same glass provided in the guest house… tapi yg kat guest house x boleh bawak balik la).

Around 8, they took us to the one of the best restaurants in town. They said it is known for their chilli crabs. And again, it is delicious, superb, marvellous… Lepas dah makan-makan, they presented us with token of appreciation. A very beautiful Chula Univ mug (if only I knew they would give us this lovely mug… argh). Lepas session tukar-tukar hadiah, we took photos, and ready to leave. Tapi, yg x sedapnya, balik tu kena jalan kaki la pulak, because there is no van provided during night. Tapi, x kisah la.. Exercise… Lagipun, it is the best way to explore cities, isn’t it?? Walaupun penat sikit, but I was enjoying it.

But, this is not the end of the day, we still have another plan. Walaupun Su n Pn Budhi x nak join, the plan is still on. We went to Patpong. They always say, if you experience Patpong, that means that you already experience the nightlife at Bangkok. For the whole day, I heard a lot of negative things about Patpong, it is not a good place, you cannot do this, you cannot do that, and it makes me wondering.. is it really that bad?? But then, bila dah jalan separuh, I found that it is not as bad or as scary as what people think. It just a street (kind of like Petaling street), filled with bars that served strip tease as their main menu. And, it is not that you can see them performing naked at the curb of the street, instead, it is a very private pub which you need to pay and go into the special rooms if you want to see them naked and do all this erotic dances bla bla bla. People always exaggerating things. Belief me, I’ve seen more in Vegas. Tapi, walaupun private pubs, their door is open, and you can peek inside. What I saw was… there was a huge platform with all these tiang… and the dancers are doing all these erotic dances bla bla bla. Tapi kalau yang nampak dari luar ni, semuanya still ada knickers and bikini tops on them la. If you want to see more, you masuk bayar la . Kat patpong pun ada banyak stall yg jual souvenirs, macam petaling street la. Banyak gak habis duit aku, beli t-shirt 4 helai, beli beg, beli purse, and bila penat, berenti beli soda dalam botol macam zaman dulu2 tu. Rasa cool gile lak minum macam tu.. hahahaha. Tapi ada satu stall yg special kat sini, ada satu stall tu dia jual patung. Patung perempuan made from fabrics yang bila pegang rasa macam pegang kulit orang. And, they designed it with all the shapes and curves yang memang dah Nampak mcm orang betul. Sesape yg desperate tu boleh la… hehehe. Dah penat berjalan, balik guest house… tidur……

Salaam,

It has been a very long time since I last updated this fotopage. A lot of things happened. Things that need explanations, clarification, everything. Things that make me wonder, appreciating myself is a lot much better rather than appreciating someone else...
Anyway, starting from now, I promised myself, I want my life to be 'documented'. Though I am not a celebrity myself (that perhaps their biography would make bestsellers), this is the only way to document my life. I am doing it for myself, I am not doing it for others… cause I am appreciating every second of my life... and later in one fine day, I would be able to look back, and not regretting everything that I would not be able to do...cause I 've lived my life to the fullest.
Since I got back from America in June 2006, this trip can be considered as my first trip abroad. Not really abroad la, cause it is still in a same continent . And, for this trip, and perhaps for the upcoming trips, it would not be for the purpose of jalan-jalan je, I got works to do. Basically, this is our first collaboration with Chulalongkorn University. Civil and Environmental Research Symposium. Ramai la jugak yang pergi. Our delegation is approximately around 26 inclusive of professors and graduate students.
That night, we gathered at rumah Pn Budhi, took a taxi to KL Sentral, then took a bus to LCCT. Flight departed around 8 am kalau x silap. 15 minutes after, they announced that we already reach ‘ruang udara Penang’. I was like….… cepat tul… laju ekk naik kapal terbang rupanya . I was so excited, so overwhelmed, which I don’t know why…. rasa macam baru first time naik kapal terbang la pulak… mungkin sebab dah lama sangat xgi proper holiday agaknya…

We reached Suvarnabumhi Airport around 11 local time. 2 hours dalam flight, rasa kejap sangat pulak. Tapi, bila sampai airport, x boleh terus gerak gi Chulalongkorn sebab the other members x sampai lagi. They all sampai dalam pukul 12 lebih. So sementara tu, kitorang explore je la airport tu… Xdelah besar sangat, KLIA lagi besar.

X lama lepas tu, Nampak rep dari Chulalongkorn Univ datang, and with her, we waited for others. Then, dgn 3 van, we all gerak ke Chula University. Memula gi guest house, makan kat international house, n balik bilik rehat sekejap.

Then, we went to the campus. Big? yes… Crowded? yes…Beautiful? So and so la…. But then they have a lot of trees, which make it redup and mendamaikan. They brought us to their department for introductory session. Dr Sakseet chaired the meeting. Basically, it’s not really a meeting, just an informal session for knowing each other. Mentioning your name, academic background, research interest, bla, bla, bla... But, the most impressive thing is, more that 80% of them graduated from America. Mentioning America, it is not some so and so university, but those with big names, MIT, Purdue, Illinois Urbana, UC Berkeley, Michigan… and listening to them, it felt like being in America again. All the American accent, make me realized, I missed my old life so much…

During meeting, we get to know one Indonesian guy named Soni. He was nice, humble, and helpful. Petang tu, lepas meeting, he promised to take us to MBK shopping center (Mambukong kot kalau x silap). At first, I was kind of underestimate the mall. I thought ours are much better… but, I was wrong. Though MBK is not really a high class mall, it is unique in its own way. Every floor seems to have their own individuality. Ada floor yang memang jual souvenirs, ada floor yg jual kain je, barang2 electronics etc. Memula, ingat nak window shopping je, tapi, at the end, banyak gak yang aku beli. Thai silk, keychain… x sampai 24 hours jejak kaki kat Bangkok, duit dah terbang melayang dari poket aku. Then, we went for dinner. Dekat food court dia ada booth yg jual makanan halal, so ok la. And, malam tu, Sony introduce a very nice local food, which I don’t know what the name is. It had slices of mangos served with sticky rice yang disimbah dengan santan. At first I thought rasa dia mcm biasa je, cause I am not really into this pulut-pulut ni, but once you taste it, you would ask for more. Mungkin sebab they all punya beras pulut memang sedap, tambah pulak dengan manga yang memang manis giler. Bukannya manis peram macam yg selalu kita rasa, tapi rasa macam manis buah yang masak kat pokok. Giler lah. Anybody that want to experience Thailand, please… try this.
Lepas tu, kitorang jalan kaki balik guest house. Xde lah jauh sangat. But, the experience is interesting. Lepas mandi semua, bermula lah kerja kitorang yang sebenar. Berbuih2 mulut aku practice untuk presentation esok… sampai tidur malam pun termimpi2 tengah present. Punya la cuak…. Ishk…ishk…ishk

Selamat Hari Raya semua...
